Shillong youth threatens indefinite hunger strike

''I wholeheartedly support HSPDP vice president  A. Basaiawmoit who has taken up this issue''

FROM A REPORTER

SHILLONG, May 14: A Shillong youth has threatened to embark on an indefinite hunger strike form Monday if the government does not resolve the present stalemate arising out of the recent High Court ruling on traditiol heads which stripped the headmen of its powers in issuing any kind of certificates.

Addressing newsmen on Thursday, Goldy Warjri said, “The traditiol heads have been performing their duties from time immemorial. It is a custom of our people and the recent high court ruling has adversely affected our centuries old custom and tradition.”

He also appealed to like-minded people of the state to join him in this cause.

He said he will be seeking permission from the authorities for a venue to stage the protest.

“I wholeheartedly support HSPDP vice president A. Basaiawmoit who has taken up this issue,” said Warjri.

Warjri said, “If there are no Dorbar Shnongs, where will the people of different localities go when they need any help. The traditiol heads are now wary after the High Court ruling. This is something sad for the people of the State because we are being deprived of our tradition.” “I have taken the decision to fast unto death till the government responds and immediately take steps to resolve this stalemate,” Warjri said.

Claiming that he is not associated with any NGO or political party, Warjri said that the reason he took the decision is for the love of his land and the people as a whole.

He said that the government should recognize the traditiol heads of the State and pass the Village Administration Bill, 2014 to empower them immediately.

Warjri stated that even if he is arrested by the authorities, he will not stop his hunger strike and continue it in the prison cell.
