Shiv Sena To Oppose Citizenship (Amendment) Bill

New Delhi: The opposition team against the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 got another player on Sunday when Shiv Sena in a letter supported the parties against the controversial Bill. Sanjay Raut, a leader of the Shiv Sena, in a letter, said that his party is determined to oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill-2016 in the Parliament.

“The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) appealed to us to oppose the Bill in the greater interest of the indigenous people of Assam, its language, culture and for protection of the identity of Assamese people,” said Raut.

He said that if the Bill is passed, the entire process of preparation of the National Register of Citizens being monitored by the Supreme Court will be meaningless.

The Shiv Sena letter came a day before the Joint Parliamentary Committee is to table the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 with amendments for its passage in the Lok Sabha.
