Shiva, Devendro, Manoj confirm berth in fils

GUWAHATI, Dec 12: Olympian boxer ShivaThapa stormed into the fil of the men’s Senior tiol Boxing Championship here today. Local hero battled a serious injury on his forehead, outplayed Punjab’s Vijay Kumar by 5-0 in a unimous decision in the semi-fil of 60kg category.

Shiva was hurt in his forehead during his quarter fil bout yesterday. He had to appear before medical board to get fitness certificate prior to today’s fight. However the boxer maged the injury nicely even though, on several occasions, his opponent tried to hit him on that particular spot

Shiva was in attacking mood from the very beginning of his fight and completely domited the first bout. He continued his attacking mood in the next two bouts also and sealed a berth in the fil by winning the bout 5-0 victory.

The two-time Olympian from Assam will now face Harya’s Ankush in the fil which will be held tomorrow. Ankush, in his semifil bout, thrashed Vikas Malik of the Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) by an unimous 5-0.

Meanwhile another star boxer Devendro, who hails from Manipur, had to overcome some anxious moments in the ring before defeated Maharashtra’s Ata Chopre 3-2 in their Flyweight category semi-fil tie. Devendro will face Chandigarh’s Deepak Singh in the fil.

Former Commonwealth Games Gold medalist Manoj Kumar, who is representing RSPB, also stormed into the fil defeating Ankush Hudda of Chandigarh in a unimous decision. The two-time bronze medalist at Asian Championships will lock horns with Duryodhan Singh of SSCB in the fil bout.

In the Light Flyweight (49kg) category, RSPB’s Shayam Kumar didn’t need to work hard to earn victory against Maharashtra’s Akshay as the referees ruled the tie 5-0 in favour of him after the first round. Harya’s Amit too moved into the fil in this category without facing his opponent in the semi fil after he got a walkover from Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) boxer Bahadur Ra.

SSCB’s Md. Hussamuddin outplayed Uttarakhand’s Sheran Sandhu 5-0 to set up a summit clash against Harya’s Akshay in the Bantamweight (56kg) category.

In the Light Welterweight (64kg) category, RSPB boxer Rohit edged 3-2 past Sandeep from the All India Police squad. In the title clash Rohit will face SSCB’s Thomans Meitei who beat Manipur’s Roshan Singh 5-0 in their semi-fil bout.
