Shiva, Devendro reach semifils of boxing tiols

GUWAHATI, Dec 11: World Championships bronze medalist Shiva Thapa and Asian silver-medalist L Devendro Singh continued their good run in the Senior tiol Men Boxing Championship and progressed to the semifils with contrasting victories here today.

Local favourite Shiva, who has upgraded to the lightweight (60kg) division, defeated Ashok Sura from All India Police in a unimous decision.

In fly (52kg) weight, comeback man L Devendro Singh, representing Manipur, had to toil hard against Harya’s Niraj. The 24-year- old boxer eked out a 3-2 win in a hard-fought contest.

Among others, former Commonwealth Games gold medalist Manoj Kumar (69kg), who is representing RSPB, outclassed Jammu and Kashmir’s Ashish 4-1 to reach the fil four.

In welterweight (69kg) category, Ankush Hudda of Chandigarh thrashed Andy Chauha of Mizoram 5-0 while Delhi boxer Prayag Chavhan also emerged victories over Manish of Madhya Pradesh to enter122 the semis.

In light fly division, Akshay of Maharashtra emerged winner over Vipin Kumar of Chandigarh after the referee stopped the bout in first round, while Bahadur Ra of SSCB beat Mizoram’s NT Lalbikkiama with referee stopping the bout in the second round this time.

Shyam Kumar, representing Railways Sports Promotion Board, defeated Neeraj of Delhi and Harya boxer Amit outdid V Jyoti Swaroop of Andra Pradesh — both in unimous decisions.
