Shortfall of 6 TMC in supply of Cauvery water, TN tells SC

New Delhi, July 5: Tamil du told the Supreme Court on Wednesday that it received nearly 6 TMC less Cauvery water from neighbouring Kartaka in the last 25 days, and the apex court asked it for a proper application on the issue. A bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A.M. Khanwilkar was told that Kartaka was to release 22.5 TMC (thousand million cubic feet) of water during the period but had released only 16.58 TMC to Tamil du.

After a mentioning by Tamil du’s counsel, the court asked the state to move a proper application and assured that it would hear the matter. The court by its orderof October 18, 2016, had directed Kartaka to continue to release 2,000 cusecs of water every day. Earlier, the court, by it October 4 order, had asked Kartaka to release 2,000 cusecs to Tamil du from October 7 till October 18, 2016.

The court reiterated its October 18 order on January 4, 2017. On March 21, the apex court reiterated its January 4 order, and directed for the fil hearings in the matter on July 11. The court is hearing cross petitions by Tamil du and Kartaka — both challenging the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribul award that ordered for Tamil du to get 419 TMC, Kartaka 270 TMC, Kerala 30 TMC, and Puducherry 7 TMC.

Kerala too has challenged the allocation of water to it by the tribul. The last hearing on the cross petitions challenging the award took place on February 7. (IANS)
