FROM A CORRESPONDENT

HAFLONG, Nov 12 : Subroto Thaosen MAC of BJP has been elected on Thursday as the new chairman of the 11th North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) unopposed as declared by the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman Juri Phukan since no other nomition was filed for the post in a special session.

Following the resigtion of Ngamrothang Hmar from the post on November 2 last, the governor of Assam had ordered for a session today at 11 A.M. at the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council session hall.

Earlier on October 25 last, the former ‘commander-in-chief’ of the now disbanded Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel), Niranjan Hojai, was elected as the chief administrator of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council on Saturday following a dramatic political coup by BJP to take control of the 30-member (28 elected and two nomited) council.

Hojai, who joined BJP recently, had been charge-sheeted by the tiol Investigation Agency (NIA) for his alleged involvement in siphoning off huge amount of government funds to DHD (J) to wage war against the state in 2010 following his arrest in Nepal. He became the second former militant leader to head an autonomous council, after Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) CEM and former chief of now disbanded Bodo Liberation Tiger (BLT) Hagrama Mohilary.

The present council was elected in 2013 in which BJP had failed to win a single seat. Congress had won 10 seats and the remaining 18 were won by Independents, including six former DHD (J) militants. Six Independents later joined Congress increasing its strength to 16 and help form the council.
