FROM A CORRESPONDENT
SHILLONG, March 10: NCP legislator representing South Shillong constituency, Sanbor Shullai, today batted for fincial assistance for “single fathers” in the state as is being done for single mothers. “I have many men from my constituency coming to my house and urging me for this kind of fincial assistance,” Shullai told the House during the debate on the Governor’s address. According to the NCP legislator there are plenty of husbands whose wives have left them and got married to other men leaving them to fend for themselves and their children. It may be mentioned that the Chief Minister’s Social Assistance Scheme for infirm, widows and disabled where in single mothers are given fincial assistance. Shullai also expressed concern over the fact that during the last by-election to the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) a number of electorates under his constituency found their mes missing. According to him, the officials of the Election Department may have deleted their mes since they were not aware that certain surmes belonged to Khasi, Jaintias and the Garos. Shullai said that the Election Department officials could have attributed surmes like Roy and Dhar to be that of non-tribals but he said that such surmes are also found among the Khasis. Only the tribals are allowed to vote in the district council elections. Moreover, NCP legislator from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai called for stringent laws to deal with cases of rape.
