Shullai questions Ardent's stand on MUDA's jurisdiction

A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Aug 7: NCP MDC from Laban-Mawprem Sanbor Shullai today criticised the stand taken HSPDP MDC from Nongkrem Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit with regards to the demand of the withdrawal of the MUDA Building byelaws from the Sixth Schedule areas.

“The stand was dramatically changed after his meeting with the Home Minister and Urban Affairs minister on August 6,” Shullai said.

Shullai also said that he failed to understand why he called for a rally by misleading the public wherein his only stand was for withdrawal of MUDA building byelaws from the Sixth Schedule area and the public believing on his stand were pleased to attend the rally.

The Laban-Mawprem MDC who is also an MLA from Shillong South constituency said that the public were so pleased by his stand that they even went to the extent of bearing lathi-charge, but they were fooled by false promises.

The NCP, MDC said that Basaiawmoit’s statement that he welcomes the decision arrived at the meeting, and that it was for safety reasons that he allowed the extension of MUDA Building Byelaws to areas outside the Municipality is questioble as to who he is and who has given him the authority to allow the extension of MUDA Building Byelaws to areas outside the Municipality.

“I would like to state that MUDA Building Byelaws can only be implemented in European Area only as per law,” Shullai added.

He also said that Basaiawmoit changing his stand all of a sudden has put a question mark on his sincerity and integrity.

According to Shullai his stand is clear that he does not care where the MUDA Building Byelaws are implemented but the MUDA should not encroach upon the Sixth Schedule areas.

“I would like to remind Mr Basaiawmoit that the law is very clear that unless the District Council gives its consent to MUDA, the MUDA cannot extend its jurisdiction into the sixth schedule area. I further advise him to look after the welfare of the people and not agree to such things that the law of the land does not allow,” Shullai added.
