Significant improvement in law and order: DGP

ITANAGAR, Feb 13: Disagreeing with the concept of deteriorating law and order situation in Aruchal Pradesh, DGP S Nithiyandam today said the crime figure, particularly in State capital, is down and thanked the people for their wholehearted support.

The traders downing their shutters here by the call of one person reflected the old culture, he said, adding this was not law & order problem but old habit die hard.

“Police alone can’t change the old habit at one go. It would take time through mass awareness, education and realisation about the futility of such practices of the masses,” he told media persons at police headquarters here while responding to questions on law & order situation.

The more the public cooperation, the less would be the crime, he assured with confidence.

The 150 more crime cases in 2014-15 than 2013-14 was less in comparison to population growth and rising cases of migration. But working out 62% cases in 2014-15 was an appreciable achievement for which right form constable to IG deserves appreciation. But all out efforts are being made for a much better result this year, he said

The law & order improved further following the imposition of President’s Rule on January 26 last with the deployment of 70 companies of security forces to deal with everything impartially, he said, adding there has been strict direction to behave politely, particularly women and children and conduct checking with sense.

Checking a bitumen-laden truck is wastage of time, he clarified.

The DGP pointed out that checking against non-use of helmet, triple riding and bike without number plate has been intensified. Bikes without number plates are presumed stolen ones for which the registration authority would be asked to streamline issue of temporary numbers, he said.

When hinted about troubling sardars for non-use of helmet, he clarified that they are exempted tion-wide and instruction would be issued but others without helmet would not be spared to ensure their safety, he said, adding 50 police personnel are being trained for traffic duty to add to existing 37 personnel and if required more hands would be given for easy traffic flow.

When told that Itagar is perhaps only capital where bikers turn road dividers and the traffic police turn a blind eye, the DGP referred to governor’s adviser B D Sharma after thorough inspection on Thursday has directed all executing agencies to develop the roads on priority which would end the mece soon.

On being told that police get the blame from the masses for easy grant of bail to the crimils, he clarified that bail is a right as per Supreme Court verdict. However, crimes are bailable and non-bailable while the courts consider various angles before granting bail the police always oppose the non-bailable cases. The public blame the police due to ignorance, he said.

When asked about the vehicle owners turning the main and colony roads as parking slots to create traffic congestion, he assured improvement very soon.
