Sikkim Government To Observe July 7 As ‘A Day For Mother Earth’

Sikkim has decided to commit a day to the earth with friendly environmental activities to address climate change. So now, Sikkim Government has decided to observe July 7 consistently as 'A Day for Mother Earth' from this year onwards.

The day is likewise matching with the end day of the nation-wide Van Mahotsav Week that is being observed from July 1 to 7. Speaking to the media at a press conference in Gangtok on Tuesday, Karma Loday Bhutia, the Minister for Forests, Environment, and Wildlife Management Department, said that Sikkim Government has concocted a respectable plan to dedicate July 7 of consistently as 'A Day for Mother Earth'.

Karma Loday Bhutia, further added that this day will be a permanent feature of the State government. "A Day for Mother Earth is a more extensive activity of the present government including environmental activities to address climate change."

He also mentioned that it has been decided to observe 'No Vehicle Plying' for seven minutes on July 7 at 11 AM all through the State.

He said it was known truth that vehicular contamination discharging carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxides of sulfur and nitrogen adds to ozone-depleting substance impact and thus worldwide warming.

He added that the fundamental goal of this undertaking was to contribute towards Nationally Determined Contributions and Sustainable Development Goals for positive climate action.

However, he informed that all crisis and basic administration vehicles will proceed with its services. Bhutia appealed the driving community and individuals of Sikkim to coordinate in this undertaking of the government to decrease the carbon emission.

The day will be celebrated in the state-level with zest and fervour with plantation and other environmental activities said Karma Loday Bhutia.
