GUWAHATI, Sept 18: After languishing one and half years in judicial custody, prime accused in the Silapathar vandalism incident, Subodh Biswas finally got bail on Tuesday from the Gauhati High Court.

The president of Nikhil Bharat Bengali Udbastu Samannay Samitee (NiBBUSS) along with his close aide was charged with vandalizing the AASU office in Silapathar on March 6 last year and was charged with abetting riots and fuelling enmity between two communities. During the march, the supporters and workers of the Bengali organization also injured eight AASU members.

Earlier, Biswas’s bail petitions were rejected on several occasions.

Notably, on March 22, Biswas was picked up from Bajitpur, a border village under Bongaon police station in North 24 Parganas district.

In connection with the ruckus, Assam Police registered a case at Silapathar Police Station under Sections 147, 148, 149, 448, 325, 307, 427 and 153 of IPC. The terms of the bail made it mandatory for Biswas not to leave Dhemaji without prior permission from the Court. The bail also cautioned him not to indulge in tempering and attempt to influence anyone else. Moreover, he has to appear in front of the Court in each and every date.
