Silchar Medical College to celebrate golden jubilee

Silchar, Aug 14: The prestigious Silchar Medical College and Hospital, Silchar, that embarked its journey on August 15, 1968, will complete its 50 years of glorious journey on the special day of Independence Day. In this regard, the newly formed golden jubilee celebration committee has taken up a yearlong programme. On the 71st I-Day, alumni members, all categories of faculty members, staffs and students will participate in a half marathon starting from Suncity point to SMCH OPD front yard. It will start from 5.30am. It will be followed by celebration of I-Day, sports related events and iuguration of golden jubilee celebration committee at 6 pm in the evening. The ceremony will be iugurated by former principal of SMCH, Dr Debidas Dutta.
This has been informed at a press-meet held at the administration building of SMCH on Monday. Joint secretary of the celebration committee, Dr Bhabatosh Roy said, "The main iugural ceremony has been scheduled for January, 22, 2018, which will run for 5 days. We are in talks with the Prime Minister's Office, New Delhi. We want Prime Minister rendra Modi to grace the occasion. Winter is the best time for organizing such gala events." It cannot be denied that SMCH needs super specialty departments. Principal, SMCH, Dr Shilpi Rani Barman, MD (Microbiology) said, "We have already sent the proposal for it and the process in undergoing. We are hopeful that government will take necessary action at the earliest. It will be a giant leap for the medical college."
 It is pertinent to mention here the number of PG and UG students have increased considerably. As per the tentative programme schedule, the yearlong programme includes a number of social service activities, health camps, blood dotion camps, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan related programmes, awareness programmes, debate and quiz competitions, fine arts, literary programmes, exhibitions, sports and games, semirs and other miscellaneous events like alumni nite and teachers' night are expected to take place. Since 1968, the Institution has been serving the ailing public of the entire Barak Valley and the adjoining regions of the neighbouring states of Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Meghalaya.
 SMCH has not only fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of the public of this region but at the same time has been able to produce a number of brilliant physicians who have been serving the ailing human community with repute in different parts of the country and the world as well. Presently, the Institute boasts of 100 undergraduates and PG course in almost all subjects. Among others present at the press-meet included Dr Arun Kumar Sipani, secretary general, vice-presidents Dr Sekhar Chakravarty and Dr Anindya Sundar Baisya of the golden jubilee celebration committee of SMCH.
