Dibrugarh, July 16: “The State Government has taken adequate measures to turn this place into a major tourist spot,” said State Water Resources, Science and Technology Minister Keshav Mahanta while he visited the site containing the supposed remains of a temple belonging to the Salastambha period at Khamti Gaon near Jokai recently.

Having a detailed discussion with the officials of the Archaeological Department while surveying the site, he said that an amount of Rs 50 lakh was earmarked from the Chief Minister’s Unspecified Fund in order to transform the historical remains into a tourist place of high order. Shedding further light on the plans, MLA of Lahoal, Rituparna Baruah said that the amount would be utilized for things, including construction of an Archaeological Museum at the site, preservation of the remains of the temple, making arrangements for putting the discovered idols on display for the tourists and building a retaining wall. He added that the foundation stone for all these projects would be laid down before August 15 and would be completed by October.

The site was held sacred by the local people for long, unaware of the debris that lay underneath. It was only during the past months of December and January that a team of archaeologists started excavating the area and found the medieval remains of around 8-9th CE, following which the site drew wide attention.
