Sivasagar all set to celebrate mami Brahmaputra

SIVASAGAR, March 28: Sivasagar is all set to celebrate the biggest river festival in India titled mami Brahmaputra, which is slated to be held from March 31 to April 4. Aimed at cherishing the pristine beauty of the mighty River Brahmaputra, Sivasagar district administration has also made elaborate arrangements for observing this grand festival at Desangmukh and Ligiribari area in the Brahmaputra river bank.

Addressing a press meet at Syukapha Conference Hall in the  DC’s office on Tuesday, rayan Konwar, Deputy Commissioner of Sivasagar, said that this river festival would showcase the rich culture of this region where all kinds of traditiol food, fashion, sports, music and dance would be exhibited.

“On March 31, the festival will be iugurated at 9 am with flag hoisting and surya pram. A grand cultural procession will be taken out thereafter at 10 am from Desangmukh High School field which will be followed by several programmes like sand art competition and Gumrag dance competition. A Mishing bhao will also be staged in the evening at 5:30 am,” Konwar said.

“We have included several interesting programmes to attract the visitors every day here in the festival like traditiol sport show, boating, wrestling, beach volleyball, kabaddi, football among people aged above 40 years and Mishing poem recitation, traditiol fashion show and cultural evening on April 1. On April 2, along with other programmes which include several competitions like, speech, story writing, poem writing and art competition, a bhao titled Shakunir Pratixudh will be staged by Sivasagar district administration and noted citizens of Sivasagar at 5:30 pm. A chorus competition on Xudhakantha Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s song Mahabahu Brahmaputra  will also held on the same day,” said Konwar

“A discussion on preservation of Brahmautra will be held on April 3 along with other day-long programmes which include aarati at 5:30 pm. The Coffee Table Book, a book to showcase the rich culture, lifestyle and tourism resources of Sivasagar district will be unveiled on April 4 by former president of Axam Xahitya Xabha, Imran Shah. mami Brahmaputra will boost up the tourism sector of Sivasagar, not only in the tiol level, but also at the intertiol level. We appeal for participation and cooperation of all people,” he added.

The press meet was also attended by District Development Commissioner Abhijit Baruah, ADCs Aswini Kumar Doley and Tapan Gohain and DIPRO Saradi Gogoi.
