Sivasagar gears up for mami Brahmaputra festival

SIVASAGAR, March 17: To showcase the potential of tourism, trade and cultural opportunities of the resourceful river-side district of Sivasagar, the district administration is going to organize the five-day mami Brahmaputra Festival from March 31 to April 4 this year.
According to district administration sources, everything will be done to make the festival a grand success. Flag hoisting, surya prayam, cultural procession, Gumrag dance and bhao will mark the iugural day of the festival. Devotiol chanting, songs and meditation will also be held during the festival at Desangmukh area on the bank of the mighty river. Events like, boat rally from Desang Sapori to Desangmukh, Karate, Tae-kwon-do, wrestling, beach volleyball, kabaddi, football, cycling and many other games will also feature during the festival.
The festival will also witness puppet show, Kavi Sanmilan, a competition on locally-produced and processed foods, traditiol attires and Bhao by District Administration. 
Symposiums on various important issues like conservation of Brahmaputra will be held at the festival. Literary and quiz competitions will also be held on the occasion.
A cultural programme with Aaroti (prayer song) for Brahmaputra is scheduled to be held at the venue on April 3. On the other hand, no cultural programme will be held on April 4, the concluding day as the State government is organizing a Central programme for all the districts in Guwahati on April 4, said the sources and added that 14 sub-committees have been formed to make the festival a grand success.
