Sivasagar jourlists stage protest against ASP's 'misbehaviour'

SIVASAGAR, Oct 31: Jourlists of Sivasagar on Saturday condemned the manner in which four jourlists of TV channels were treated by the Sivasagar police today.

 Bhaskarjyoti Das, Atanu Borah, Rupjyoti Handique and Rajesh Basfor of Guwahati-based different TV news channels have accused Additiol Superintendent of Police, Sivasagar Debasish Sharma of threatening them if they did not stop shooting.

 According to allegations made by the jourlists, they were threatened by ASP Debasish Sharma while covering the story of Sivasagar bandh today when ASP Sharma was allegedly assaulting bandh picketers. Sharma threatened them of dire consequences if the story was aired, alleged the electronic media jourlists.

 After the incident, media persons of both print and electronic media of Sivasagar, covered their mouths with black cloth as a mark of protest and staged a sit-in protesting against the alleged threat by the ASP at Dolmukh Chariali and demanded the authority to take appropriate action against the accused police officer.

 A 12-hour Sivasagar bandh had been called today by Joutho Sangrami Mancha (JSM) in protest against the arrest of two teachers mely Basanta Neog and Lili Mohan. Both Neog and Mohan had been arrested during Sivasagar bandh on October 28.

 On the other hand, the12-hour Sivasagar bandh called by the JSM passed off successfully in the district. All shops and business establishments remained closed during the bandh hours. However, four vehicles which include three ASTC buses and a private vehicle were damaged as stones were pelted at Haripora ali near Cherekapar area.
