Sivasagar observes Axom Divas

SIVASAGAR, Dec 3: Along with the rest of the State, Sukapha Divas or Asom Divas commemorating the advent of the first Ahom king Chaolung Sukapha to Assam from the Patkai Hills, was observed in a befitting manner in Sivasagar district.

The event was organized by the district administration here at the Sukapha Conference Hall in the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The celebration started with paying of floral tributes at the image of Chaolung Sukapha by District Development Commissioner Abhijit Baruah, Additiol Deputy Commissioners Aswini Kr. Doley, Moon Gogoi, Tapan Gohain, Manuj Baruah, Assistant Commissioner Priyanku Jyoti Sharma and other senior officials, besides employees of Deputy Commissioner’s establishment.

It was followed by an open discussion session. Speaking on the occasion, Shantanu Chetia highlighted the role of Sukapha in forming a great Assam under Ahom dysty. Chetia said Chaolung Sukapha was a great warrior and leader who brought about the unification of various communities into one whole, and shaped their history. Chetia said Sukapha endeared himself to various communities by respecting their sentiments, language, art and culture and never imposed anything on them and his process of unification paved the way for the creation of greater Assamese society.

Terming Sukapha as a builder of great Assam, ADC Tapan Gohain laid stress on the need for studying the ideology of Sukapha.  Urging all to imbibe Sukapha’s ideals and work relentlessly for ushering in a golden Assam, Gohain said, “It was his friendly and conciliatory approach and matrimonial relations that helped him to strengthen ties with different communities and help build the edifice of the Ahom kingdom that continued to rule for long six centuries.”
