Six BJP workers injured in clash with police in Agartala

AGARTALA, Oct 15:  A political protest in Tripura suddenly turned violent on the Laxmi Puja day as a large number of BJP workers demonstrated in front of the Chief Minister’s house, clashed with police.

The BJP workers protested against the alleged attack on their state president Biplab Deb last night. At least six BJP workers sustained injury as police resorted to lathi charge to disperse the agitating party workers. Three police personnel including the officer-in-charge of the West Agartala police station, rayan Saha also sustained injuries during the melee.

The BJP organised a procession to protest against the attack on their state president by some miscreants in front of his house, damaged his car, assaulted his driver and tried to enter into his

house at tun Pally in the Krish gar area in Agartala last night.

The persol security officer of Deb had to fire one round in the air to disperse the mob.

The procession started from in front of the BJP office, marched through different roads and suddenly changed its course and rushed towards the Chief Minister’s house.

Subal Bhowmik, state vice president of the BJP alleged that police resorted to lathi charge on the peaceful demonstrators without any provocation.

He said BJP district committee member Pradip Debth and the district president of the BJP Minority Morcha Litan Mia also were among the injured party workers and had to admit in hospital.

He said the matter has already been brought to the notice of the party’s central leadership and they are going to  launch a state-wide agitation.

Giving details of last night’s incident, he said a group of boys belonging to New Boys Club while returning after immersion of Durga idol suddenly attacked Biplab Deb’s car parked in front of his rented house and assaulted the driver. When the driver tried to enter the house for safety they followed him forcing the PSO to fire one round in the air.

He alleged that a member of the CPI (M) Ramgar local committee Shantanu Bhattacharjee was present on  the spot and instigated the boys to attack the car.

He said another attack was made on Biplab Deb’s car on October 11 at Ramgar area when his wife Niti Vidrohi and children were in the car. However, the TSR jawans escorting him maged to control the situation.

Police arrested three persons including Shantanu Bhattacharjee following complaint filed by Deb.
