Six high rise buildings sealed

Staff Correspondent

Shillong, June 15: Further expediting its drive against illegal high-rise buildings, East Khasi Hills district administration has sealed at least six buildings in Shillong on Monday.

The process of sealing was initiated following the directive of the Meghalaya High Court which observed that some high-rise buildings are extremely unsafe in the Shillong agglomeration area and that these would lead to heavy casualties in the event of earthquakes and landslides.

The court has given one week time to the government to act on its order and the next hearing is due on June 18. Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills Sanjay Goyal is on the field, supervising the sealing of the high-rise buildings. Speaking to this correspondent, Goyal said, “Although we are running against time, all efforts will be made to comply with the court order.”
