Six UGPO rebels held in Udalguri

KOKRAJHAR, January 13: Security forces apprehended six members of United Gorkha People's Organization (UGPO), from different locations in Baska and Udalguri districts of BTC on Monday.

Police sources said six persons including UGPO commander–in–chief Suraj Magor, chairman Lal Bahadur  Tamang, vice–chairman Suresh Ghimire and two cadres Arjun Chetri and Birkha Bahadur Limbu were arrested  from different locations in Baksa and Udalguri district on Monday. Police said the rebel group was formed last year. A few cases of extortion have also been reported against the militant group. Police sources added that a cadre of the outfit was apprehended in Chirang district and arms seized few months back.

In November a huge cache of sophisticated arms and ammunition, which was bound for Siliguri, belonging to the rebel group, was seized in Chirang. The consignment of arms and ammunition was recovered from a Tata  Safari bearing registration number WB 74AE/4788 at Chapaguri under Dhaligaon police station in a joint  operation carried out by Chirang police, CRPF's 156 Battalion and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel. A US–made M16 rifle, two Italian–made Beretta pistols, three .32 bore pistols, 300 rounds of 9mm  ammunition, 80 rounds of ammunition of AK–series rifles, 198 rounds of M16 ammunition and 60 rounds of  .32 ammunition were recovered from the vehicle. Two members of the UGPO were also arrested in Kokrajhar earlier, police sources said.
