Goalpara, August 23: State Fisheries and Water Resource, Industries and Commerce Minister Basanta Das visited Goalpara on Sunday and took stock of the progress of different ongoing schemes under his departments.
In a meeting held at the Bhalukdubi Circuit House, the minister reviewed the present situation of flood and the river protection bundhs in the district with the Deputy Commissioner JVN Subramanyam, chief engineer PP Changkakoty and executive engineer Prab Kr. Das and gave necessary directions.
Earlier, in a discussion on the Rs 1,500-crore Kohinoor Pulp and Paper Industry, which is coming up at the Mornoi area, Basanta Das expressed concern over its slow progress before the District Congress team.
Abu Sayed, president DCC, Abdur Rasid Mondal, chairman, Minorities Development Board and Safiqul Ahmed, District Coorditor, briefed the minister on the latest development of the industry and the growing grievances of the public against this lone proposed big industry. The minister assured the DCC team of taking the matter seriously and carrying out an inquiry into it.
Meanwhile, Safiul Islam, chairman, Lower Assam Minority tiol Parishad, who recently submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister in this regard, welcomed this initiative by the minister. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and then State Industries and Commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi had laid the foundation of this industry way back in the year 2011.
