Social worker Gakul Sonowal passes away

DOOMDOOMA, Dec 6:  Noted social worker Gakul Sonowal of Dangri area breathed his last on Saturday following prolonged ailments. He was 89 and is survived by his wife, one son and a daughter. A turalist and horticulturist by inclition and self-culture, he developed his own scientific garden where he planted trees of some rare species.

He was associated with Dangri High School as a teacher since its inception and rendered sincere services for upgradation of the institute to higher secondary level in due course.

He was also instrumental in upgrading the Dangri Dispensari started first by his uncle Late Dhaniram Das into a Public Health Centre (PHC).  He was also a good sportsman and played football and volleyball regularly. On cultural front also, he came to the prominence in acting, playwright and on staging dramas.  Late Sonowal was closely associated with Assam movement and was the president of Saikhowa-Dangri Anchalik Ga Sangram Samity. He was an authority on tribal movements in Assam and was a member of Tribal League.

He prepared a biographical sketch on Late Jogendra th Hazarika who besides being an MP was Speaker and Chief-Minister of Assam. He was also President of Krishak Adhikar Surakhya Samity (KASS)’s, Dangri Anchalik committee.

During tural calamities like earthquake and devastating flood he always stood on the forefront for conducting relief and rescue operation even at the cost of his life.  His death cast a pall of gloom. He was cremated at Dangri today in the presence of his many admirers.
