Sonowal opens World Youth Women's Boxing meet

GUWAHATI, Nov 19: The AIBA World Youth Women’s Boxing Championship got under way today at the Md. Toyabullah Hockey Stadium, Bhetapara. Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal, who was the Chief Guest in the function,  declared the championship open. 

Altogether 160 boxers from 31 countries are taking part in the tourment which will be continued till November 26.

Speaking on the occasion, chief minister Sonowal said that the AIBA World Youth Women’s Boxing Championship is yet another step of the efforts of the State Government in making Guwahati a sports capital of country. He also said that State Government is relentlessly trying to make Assam and more particularly Guwahati as an important destition of sports.

Minister of State for Sports ba Kumar Doley, President of Boxing Federation of India Ajay Singh, Vice President AIBA Edgar Tanner, Chief Secretary of Assam VK Pipersenia and ace boxer Mary Kom were also present in the iugural function.

The iugural speech of Sonowal was followed by a colourful function that was not as alluring as earlier mega events hosted in the city.

Bollywood singer Shaan and popular Assamese singer Simanta Sekhar today performed in the iugural function. On the other hand Ankushita Boro, the boxer from Assam who will represent India in the tourment, took oath on behalf of the players.

The championship is expected to focus its spotlight on talented young female boxers from around the world. Several bouts of the competition were held today before the start of the iugural function.
