Shillong, April 28: A Sordar (Khasi traditiol head) will appear before the Meghalaya High Court on Wednesday in connection with the contempt of court proceedings drawn against him.

Skhembor Khongjirem, the Sordar of Wahkhen village, East Khasi Hills district under Pynursla constituency has been directed to appear before the bench of Justice SR Sen.

It may be mentioned that on April 23, the Meghalaya High Court has ordered contempt of court proceedings against Khongjirem for issuing residential certificates to villagers in violation of the Meghalaya High Court order.

During a press conference on April 17, the Sordar told the media that despite the High Court directive, he has been issuing certificates to the villagers since they came to him for such documents for opening of a bank account or for submission to the government departments to avail various schemes.

Khongjirem claimed that the certificates have greatly helped residents, especially farmers who are applying for loan and various government schemes.

On December 10, 2014 the Meghalaya High Court had passed a verdict prohibiting the Rangbah Shnongs (Headmen) from issuing no objection certificates to residents.
