Stage set for ABSU’s golden jubilee celebration in Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR, Feb 11: The stage is all set at Jangkrithai Fwthar, Kokrajhar for holding the historic golden jubilee celebration and 49th session of the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) from Sunday with a four-day colorful programme.

The entire area of the golden jubilee celebration wears a festive look. Fil touches are being given to the main pandal, exhibition-cum-book fair, semir halls, delegate hall, parade ground, flag hoisting point, jubilee celebration point and delegate camps.

The president of the ABSU, Promod Boro said the preparations had been completed for the historic golden jubilee celebration. He said the ABSU hd come a long way with its mission and vision for the community and it would move forward with its objectives for the cause of the Bodos. He said there would be semirs on various issues like-education, health, agriculture, entrepreneur, language and literature, women empowerment, youth, economy, human rights, political rights, land rights, media, governce, regiol cooperation, insurgency problem, environment and cultural affairs, and these semirs would be held in eight semir halls simultaneously. He also said the ABSU would felicitate the former leaders, workers, former presidents and secretaries of the ABSU who had dedicated themselves for the cause of the society. He further said the student body would felicitate the family members who lost their near and dear ones during the Bodoland movement and the felicitation would continue for a year as the golden jubilee would be celebrated year-long till February, 2018.

Boro said the ABSU would discuss the history of the student movement, its activities for the social reformation, struggle for the cause of the Bodo students, language and literature, socio-economic uplift and to establish the Bodos as a master race in the world. He also said the union would seek opinion and advice from the senior workers and intellectuals to take the objectives of the ABSU forward and framing the future strategies. He further said dignitaries from various parts of the country, university, senior jourlists, resource persons, specialists and movement leaders had been invited in the golden jubilee celebration.

Lawrence Islary, general secretary of the ABSU, said the ABSU was founded on February 15 in 1967 and this year it completed 50 glorious years. He said nearly 10,000 delegates and observers would take part in the celebration from all districts across Assam as well as from other States and West Bengal state unit of ABSU. He also said resource persons from different universities of the country would participate in the semirs.

Islary said there would be a book fair and exhibition for which over 160 stalls had been set up. Cultural troupes from different communities, including a team from Bhutan, had confirmed their participation in the conference. He added that noted social activist and UN Brahma Soldier of Humanity award winner, Aru Roy would grace the open session as chief guest on the concluding day of the celebration.

As part of the programme, on the first day on Sunday, the main gate of the jubilee celebration would be iugurated by the president of the reception Committee-Dr.Subung Basumatary, Kakeswar rzary memorial main pandal would iugurated by the IGP, BTC, Dr. LR Bishnoi, martyr Mohini Mohan Brahma memorial dining hall would be iugurated by the Principal of Kokrajhar Science College, Dr. RN Sinha while the Arup Gwra Basumatary memorial delegate hall and Nil Kamal Brahma memorial exhibition-cum-book fair would be iugurated by Principal of Kokrajhar Government College, Dr. Biy Kr.Brahma and Principal Secretary of BTC, Biren Chandra Phukan.

Kokrajhar SP, Rajin Singh will iugurate the Daoharu Garla Batha Basumatary memorial volunteers’ camp while Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Bibekanda Choudhury and Principal of Kokrajhar Science College Dr. Ratneswar Devth will iugurate the Mohini Mohan Brahma memorial guest house and Leben (Daorao) Brahma memorial market respectively, followed by central working committee meeting of the ABSU.

The president of the ABSU Promod Boro will formally iugurate the golden jubilee celebration while the president of the AASU, Dipankar th will be the special guest. The event will be graced by Shreehari Aney, former advocate general of Maharastra and leader of Vidharva movement as chief guest, while the president of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha, Dr. Kameswar Brahma and Dr. Ramesh Bhardwaj, HoD of Sanskrit, Delhi University will be appointed speakers.

State Ministers Pramila Rani Brahma and Rihon Daimary and Rajya Sabha MP, Biswajit Daimary will be present as distinguished guests while senior jourlists Patricia Mukim, Adip Phukan, Atanu Bhuyan, Maini Mahanta, Mril Talukdar, Nitumani Saikia, Paragmuni Aditya and Samudra Gupta Kashyap have been invited along with former MP, SK Bwiswmuthairy, former Rajya Sabha MP, UG Brahma, general secretary of Bhutan-India Friendship Association, Gelegphu Chapter, Ugen Rabten and leaders of various organizations, including leaders of autonomous councils.
