Stakeholders meet for Gibbon conservation

Itagar, Feb 11: In its initiative to conserve Eastern Hoolock Gibbon in the eastern part of Aruchal Pradesh, ENVIRON, a society for conservation and magement of ture and tural resources in North East India on Wednesday organized a local stakeholder’s meet in the Mishmi Hills Camp at Roing in Lower Dibang Valley district with the support of U S Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS).

Principal Investigator of the Project Dr Kuladip Sarma gave a comprehensive overview of the CHGAAP project and work done so far in the project while Division of Wildlife & Biodiversity conservation Head K Mazumdar gave a background of the programme which was held yesterday, an official release informed here today.

The duo hoped that they would prolong their support in the similar efforts in next phase as well. Several suggestions were made during the meet for proper implementation of the school level programme and community conservation initiatives.

Keraa Initiative for Cultural & Ecological Security (KICES) President Jibi Pulu and Idu Mishmi Cultural & Literary Society (IMCLS) General Secretary Rajib A Miku also participated in the discussion emphasizing on heritage conservation considering gibbon as a flagship species.

It is to be noted that the project was officially launched in October 2015 by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest & Principal Secretary (E & F) in Itagar with the support of Forestry Department, North Eastern Regiol Institute of Science & Technology, Department of Zoology, Rajiv Gandhi University and G B Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development, NE Unit, Itagar.
