SILCHAR, September 13: In a programme a statue of poet Kazi zrul Islam was installed in Park Road area of the town today. The statue was iugurated by Kazi Mazahar Hussain, general secretary, zrul Academy, Burdwan and nephew of the great poet. The statue is designed by sculptor artist Gautom Paul of Krish gar, West Bengal. The land for the project was doted by Silchar Municipal Board to zrul Academy of Silchar for the purpose.
Kazi zrul Islam was a Bengali poet, musician and revolutiory who pioneered poetic works espousing intense spiritual rebellion against fascism and oppression. Born into a Bengali Muslim Kazi family, zrul received religious education and worked as a muezzin at a local mosque. He learned of poetry, drama, and literature while working with theatrical groups. zrul’s writings explore themes such as love, freedom and revolution. He opposed all bigotry, including religious and gender.
Throughout his career, zrul wrote short stories, novels, and essays but is best known for his poems, in which he pioneered new forms such as Bengali gazals. zrul wrote and composed music for nearly 4,000 songs, collectively known as zrul geeti which are widely popular even today. Invited by the Government of Bangladesh, zrul and his family moved to Dhaka in 1972, where he died four years later. Kazi was the rebel poet of Bengal. But he was also the master in writing poetry on romance, ture, brotherhood, tiolism and a lot more.
Others present on the occasion included Partha Sarathi Chakraborty, president, Debasish Chanda, secretary, and Jaganth Bhattacharjee, member, of zrul Academy, Silchar.
