Status of 500 Playgrounds Reviewed By Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the functioning of Assam Youth Development Mission Society under Mega Mission Chief Minister’s Samagra Gramya Unnayan Yojna (CMSGUY) in a meeting held in his office conference room at Janata Bhawan on Monday evening.

Saying that competitive spirit must be inculcated among the sports talents at rural areas to excel in their chosen fields, the CM reviewed the status of the work to build five hundred playgrounds in the state. He exhorted the sports department officials to create awareness about sports at the grassroots and encourage the youth to take up sports as a way of life while making the playground development scheme as ambitious as Prime Minister’s Khelo India programme. He also urged for inviting sports experts, noted former players from various parts of the country and the world to gain ideas to develop sports sector of the state.

According to a press release, the CM also emphasized the need to focus on the sports disciplines where there was medal winning scope in events such as National Games, Asian and Olympic Games. Directing District Sports Officers to visit the villages to identify and nurture sports talents and also to find out requirement of playgrounds. Awareness generation about different sports disciplines in the grassroots was of paramount importance to make Guwahati the sports capital of India, Sarbananda Sonowal said.

Member Secretary of State Level Advisory Committee on Sports and Youth Welfare Lakhya Konwar, CEO of CMSGUY Mega Mission Society RT Jindal, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Sanjay Lohia, Principal Secretary of Finance Department Samir Kumar Sinha were also present in the meeting among others.
