Strict punishment demanded for rapists

MARGHERITA, May 14: Comrade Shikha Das, secretary of All India Progressive Women’s Association, Tinsukia District Committee, on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Assam through the Tinsukia District Deputy Commissioner demanding double life imprisonment of those involved in the rape and murder of Champa Chetry of Baragolai under Margherita Police Station, whose body was found at Dehing River, Lama gaon on May 3. Comrade Shikha Das said that Rs 10 lakh compensation should be given to the victim’s family members. She demanded a judicial probe into the incident, fast-track court and steps for developing social consciousness towards ensuring security of women.
