SUCI (C ) condemns BJP chief's 'provocative' remark

  From Our Correspondent

Silchar, April 22: Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), Cachar district committee, vociferously condemned the statement of BJP chief Siddartha Bhattacharya that “all the people living in Assam including Barak Valley are Assamese”.

A statement issued to the media today said that Bhattacharya’s remark had reportedly hurt the sentiments of the people of Barak Valley, where thirteen people laid down their lives for the sake of their Mother Tongue Bengali.

“Assam is a multi-lingual state where the people of different castes, creeds, communities and religions live together. Such provocative statement made by Assam BJP leader may breach peace in the state. Bhattacharya’s statement also revealed the intention of the party that it has no respect for other communities,” said the statement signed by SUCI (C) leader Ajoy Roy.

The statement said that BJP leaders often claimed to work for the interest of the Bengali speaking people, but Bhattacharya’s “provocative” statement reveals the fact that BJP also did not stand apart from any other regiol groups.

The SUCI ( C) also condemned the role of the BJP local leaders who maintained mum when their president was making such remark. The “dual sides” of BJP leaders have also been revealed badly, the statement added.

BJP’s chief statement has created lots of ripples in Barak Valley which might lead to damaging the saffron brigade’s base here. It may also create chinks in the party’s Bengali speaking vote bank. It can be mentioned here that BJP won nine out of 15 seats in Barak Valley in 1991. But, in 2011 Assembly elections BJP failed to get a single seat. However, BJP won Silchar seat in the by-elections last year. The saffron brigade presently holds Silchar civic body.
