NAGAON: Sensation prevails in Nagaon after an irate mob of suspected nationals physically attacked Wildlife DFO Jitendra Kumar and some other forest personnel at Lathimari river island under Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary on Thursday.

According to sources, in the attack two Maruti Gypsy cars of the Forest Division were damaged, besides injuries to two forest personnel. Sources said that DFO Jitendra Kumar, along with his team, went to the river island under Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuary on Thursday to review an eviction order issued by State Government. But when they reached there, an irate mob comprising around 150 people, including women and children, intercepted two vehicles of the forest personnel.

The mob was so violent that without considering anything, the people pounced at the DFO and his men and destroyed the glass windows and other parts of the vehicles.

Meanwhile, the forest personnel and two PSOs somehow saved the DFO. In doing so, two of the forest personnel sustained injuries.

In the meantime, Juria Police rushed to the spot and rescued the team and also tried to bring the situation under control.

Speaking to this correspondent, DFO Jitendar Kumar said that an eviction order had been issued by the State Government against around 100 families encroaching upon the river island. They have constructed houses illegally, he said. On Thursday morning, he and his team went there only to review all those encroachments. But on the way they were attacked mercilessly by the encroachers and suspected nationalities and two of their vehicles were damaged.

The DFO said that his Gypsy car (AS02V 6866) was damaged in the attack and two of his men were injured. He said that the sudden attack by the suspected people was the result of instigation by one Abu Bakkar Shiddik, a leader of the Sangkhyaloghu Sangram Parishad. He said that an FIR would be lodged in Juria police station.
