Tackle price rise swiftly, CM exhorts DCs

District administrations told to submit market inspection reports by June 29

Guwahati, June 25: Expressing concern over soaring prices of essential commodities, Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal has asked officers of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department and Deputy Commissioners to make serious efforts to check price rise.

Speaking at a high level meeting in the conference room of his office in Assam Secretariat, Sonowal expressed concern over rising prices and issued a directive to Deputy Commissioners to carry out compulsory market inspection in their respective districts and submit their report with photograph to the Chief Minister’s Office by June 29.

Direction has also been given to the Deputy Commissioners to take remedial steps to control price rise so that essential commodities do not remain out of reach of common people. Sonowal also said, “Once we get reports from the districts, we can ascertain the actual cause of price rise and will be able to arrest the problem”.

Sonowal also asked Deputy Commissioners to convene meetings with whole sellers, retailers and bazar committees and tackle the problem of price rise. The CM also directed the inspectors of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department to undertake inspections at the premises of whole sellers and retailers and address the mismatch between wholesale and retail prices. Expressing concern over the steep prices of fruits especially during the holy Ramazan month, he also gave strict direction to address this problem.

Chief Minister Sonowal also directed the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs department to take a look at the buffer stock of food articles and asked for a clear picture on how food items are being disbursed at the fair price shops in rural areas.

The Chief Minister also asked the Deputy Commissioners to maintain cleanliness in market places.
