JORHAT, June 11: A Tata Winger vehicle bearing registration number AS 06 AC 6526, which was stolen three years back from Dibrugarh under Lahoal PS,was recovered during a routine police check at NH- 39 under Santipur Tha of Borpathar Police station of Karbi Anglong and the driver Khulakpan Ranjan (30), a resident of Guwahati but origilly from Manipur, was arrested. The vehicle was hired by four Manipuri students of the Aligarh Muslim University for a drop journey from Guwahati to Imphal. Second OC of Santipur Tha, Prdyut Dutta informed, “The vehicle was stolen from under Lahoal Police Outpost and that after three years the file of the case was closed. However, during a regular ka check we stopped the vehicle and asked for papers. The driver was giving contradictory statements and we decided to do a proper check. Using the VAHAAN software we got information that the vehicle was registered in the me of Anu Gogoi of Lahoal Changmai Gaon under Dibrugarh. On contacting Lahoal police, we got the information that the vehicle had  been stolen and we immediately arrested the driver and investigation is on. All these three years the vehicle was operating in Guwahati. The registration card produced by the driver is fake. We will open a new case and serially investigate the matter again.”  Meanwhile, it has learnt that some goons of a particular bank has seized the vehicle because of non-payment of EMIs and gave a one month time to clear the dues. But when owner Anu Gogoi arrived with the EMI money, the bank mager informed that the vehicle had been auctioned. Thereafter, Anu Gogoi filed a case of theft against the bank officer and till date the mager is said to be absconding. However, failure of the Dibrugarh police has been attributed as the main reason behind the closure of the case following non-recovery of the vehicle. An alleged nexus between bank, police and goons is what the people have alleged.
