KOKRAJHAR, May 3: Amidst protest by different organizations against the collection of tax in the toll gates, the toll gate at Dohalapara in Chirang district have been continuing without any interference from the district administration.
The Krishak Mukhti Sangram Samity (KMSS) has been demanding to eradicate the toll gates installed in the highways passing through Assam. One such example is in Dohalapara of Chirang district where such business is continuing without any interception from the district administration. Local people alleged that the administration and the social organizations had not raised their voices against such activities. The toll gate collects heavy tax and the people have to bear the brunt of such tax and there is already inter-State check gate at Srirampur in Kokrajhar and Boxirhat in Dhubri to pay taxes.
It is alleged that the tiol Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has also increased the tax considerably from the vehicles plying along the tiol Highway at Dohalapara toll gate. Some of the drivers alleged that the collectors in the toll gate do not give receipt while collecting tax from the vehicles travelling at night. There is an apprehension among the vehicle owners about the collection of tax in the toll gate. Besides, the construction of four-lane tiol highway is not completed. Most of the bridges, especially in Kokrajhar, Chirang and part of Bongaigaon, have not been completed. The progress of four-lane works in Kokrajhar district is still quite slow.
