Dibrugarh, April 9: Several members and office-bearers of Tai Ahom Yuva Parishad (TAYPA) went on a 48-hour hunger strike on Monday demanding the under-construction Bogibeel Bridge to be rechristened as ‘Sukapha Setu’ - after Chaolung Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom dysty.
In the strike that began from 9 am at Chowkidinghee, the members also demanded the speedy completion of the long-pending Bogibeel Project. Participating in the hunger strike, president of the Dibrugarh District Committee of TAYPA, Dipankar Dowarah justified the demand regarding the reming of the mega project. Dowarah said that the Assam which was carved out by the first Ahom king by entwining various communities and tribes was peerless. Hence, reming the combined road and rail bridge after Sukapha would send across a positive message, he said.
The 4.94 km long Bogibeel project, built over the mighty river Brahmaputra, is one of the most ambitious projects of India, and will connect the districts of Dibrugarh and Dhemaji, thereby reducing the travel time between the two by a great degree. The mega project is expected to be complete this year.
