Tenung, Nellie emerge as champions in media badminton tourney

Itagar, Jan 28: Tenung Tabin representing Itagar Doordarshan Kendra (DDK) and Nellie N Manpoong of Aruchal Press Club (APC) were crowned champions in men’s and women’s singles category respectively in the second edition of Press Badminton League (PBL)-2018 which came to an end at the MLA Cottage Badminton Stadium here on Saturday.

Tabing’s opponent H Open Singh decided not to continue with the match due to an injury leaving him as the winner, Nellie, on the other hand sustained her domince in the women’s singles category and defeated Eva Tissopi in straight sets of 21-12 and 21- 16.

Nellie paired with Mibom Dai also went on to grab the mixed doubles crown as the duo defeated the pair of Damien Lepcha and Eva Tissopi.

While Damien and Eva domited the first set to win it 21-16, Mibom and Nellie made a superb comeback in the next two sets to win the match 16-21, 15-21.

The women’s doubles was more of a battle between the DDK players. The pair of Ibom Gara and Jumter Riba was no match for Lipi Nyodu and her partner Tumngam Bagra as the latter defeated the former in straight sets of 21-12 and 21-12.

The match of the day, however, came in the form of men’s doubles, as Rakesh Doley and Denhang Bosai representing All India Radio and department of IPR respectively put a tough fight in front of DDK’s H Open Singh and Goi Gara.

Though Rakesh and Bosai won the first set 21-17, the pair of Singh and Gara maged to bounce back in the second and won the set 21-13. The third set saw a fearsome, yet entertaining encounter between the two teams and 21-19 was the score by the end of the match in favour of Singh and Gara.

Capital SP Sagar S Khalsi who graced the grand file as chief guest later also gave away the prizes to the winners and participants along with senior jourlists Tongam Ri and Pradeep Kumar Behera.

Congratulating the filists, Singh said, “Your participation in the tourment is more important than winning it and I am sure that a lot of youngsters will draw inspiration from your efforts.”

Aruchal Press Club president Chopa Cheda also extended his congratulation to the organizing committee of the event.

“I congratulate all the participants and winners and also the organizing committee for coming up with such a wonderful tourment for the press fraternity of state,” said Cheda further extending his appreciation to the Aruchal State Badminton Association (ASBA) for its support in conducting the tourment.

Earlier on Friday, the tourment was declared open by IPR and PHE Minister Bamang Felix.
