Tezpur all set for Durga Puja festivity

Tezpur, Sept 20:  People in the historic town of Tezpur and its surrounding areas, irrespective of caste, community and religion, are all geared up to celebrate Durga Puja with great enthusiasm. Tezpur and its outskirts already have a festive look since the day of Mahalaya. Thousands of devotees came out on the streets and then went to Jahajghat and Ganeshghat marking the Mahalaya, considered as an important event prior to Puja. Several places, including Bhairabi, besides other domestic and community puja pandals in Tezpur town vibrated with chanting of Vedic mantras from midnight till morning, believed to be welcome Goddess Durga to earth.

This year, as per the report revealed by the district administration, Durga Puja will be celebrated by over 160 puja committees here. Like last year, this year too people will see Goddess Durga at the Usha gar Yubak Sangha Puja in a traditiol Assamese attire, while the Bhairab gar Sarbojanin Durgabari celebration committee in association with Bhairab gar Yubak Society, will maintain discipline and focus on decoration, as the committee had been awarded for best discipline and astounding puja decoration four times earlier.

 Interaction with this correspondent, Dr. Lakheswar Bhuyan, president and Biplab Das, veteran art designer of the puja committee said, “This time we have taken a very innovative project based on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan by utilizing the useless materials scattered to convey the message of keeping the town clean.”

The first family puja of the then undivided Darrang district, performed by the Mukherjee family near Tezpur Police Station here, has stepped into its 155th year. Likewise, the historic family puja of Gangacharan Bhattacharya of Kolibari, Gangaram Das of Tol Gereki area and the 75-year-old Durga Puja of noted freedom fighter Mahadev Sharma are looked forward to every year. The district administration has urged all concerned, including the puja committees and the people to extend their cooperation to the administration, so that during the festival no untoward incident takes place. On the other hand, when contacted the Additiol SP, Sonitpur, Numal Mahatta informed that all security arrangements had been made for smooth celebration.
