Tezpur College becomes a battleground for two student unions

Tezpur, Aug 24: With the college student union poll approaching, Tezpur College has become became a battleground for two student unions – the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Akhil Bharitiya Viddarthi Parishad (ABVP). Preparation for election campaign, nomition procedures and other formal events has been initiated in Tezpur College. Moreover, the prolonged rivalry between the AASU and ABVP is also popping up with heated arguments and minor clashes. The atmosphere of the college has turned very tense following the recent incident in which the members of the two student unions physical attacked each other at the college premises, and this has adversely affected the students of the college.

According to the sources, the AASU alleged that a girl and two unidentified boys were campaigning on behalf of ABVP and when AASU members tried to stop them, the members of ABVP came out in large numbers and started physically assaulting them and even tore their college uniform. On the other hand, ABVP alleged that a girl, who was a leader of ABVP, had approached the Principal for some persol matter but the members of AASU prevented her from meeting the Principal. The girl called the members of ABVP for help but the AASU members started physically attacking the ABVP members.

In this connection, two separate cases were registered at Tezpur Police Station vide No.1688/17 and 1689/17 following receipt of complaints from both sides, police sources said.
