Tezpur varsity erupts after homeguard 'assaults' female student

Tezpur, Nov 6: Sensation prevailed on Sunday night at Tezpur University (TU) in Sonitpur district following an allegation of physical assault on a girl of the university during the Tech-Xetra event. According to sources, a girl of the university alleged that a homeguard med Bhadia Das had touched her while the Tech-Xetra programme was on and this created a volatile situation in the university. The homeguard was allegedly confined for nearly five hours by a group of students until he confessed that he physical assaulted the girl. Some vehicles were also damaged by angry students.
Later, district administration officials and Tezpur Police rushed to TU and rescued the homeguard. After the situation was brought under control, police took the homeguard to the police station on Monday morning.
Numal Mahatta, Addition Superintendent of Police, Sonitpur, said, “We had received an allegation from a girl of the university of being physically assaulted by one homeguard and the alleged homeguard, upon confessing that he had touched the girl, was arrested. Further, course of action will be initiated against the person after thorough investigation of the matter and accordingly necessary retribution will be imposed as deemed fit.”
