Thalassemia awareness and screening camp held

mrup, June 20: The ICMR-Regiol Medical Centre, NE Region, Dibrugarh, in collaboration with Rainforest Conservation Education Centre organized a Thalassemia awareness and screening camp at Joypur  H.S. School premises,  Joypur recently.

 Dr. Moloy Mukharjee, Scientist-E from tiol Institute of Immunohaematology, ICMR, Mumbai graced the occasion as the chief guest and encouraged the camp. To mark the awareness camp, a short film on prevention of Thalassemia was displayed. In addition to this, a power point presentation was presented by Dr SK Sharma, Scientist-F, Senior Deputy Director, ICMR, Dibrugarh to spread awareness about the causes, prevention and remedies of Thalassemia.

In this camp the need and importance of voluntary blood dotion for the treatment of Thalassemia was equally stressed. This awareness camp was followed by Thalassemia screening camp which was conducted by Dr SK Sharma, Dr Moloy Mukharjee and Dr PJ Boruah, Scientist –C, ICMR, Dibrugarh along with two lab technicians and three PhD students. Besides, Dr.  Bishwajit Baruah, SDM and HO , harani Block PHC, too assisted this camp. Such a camp was already organized by ICMR, Dibrugarh in collaboration with Rainforest Conservation Education Centre, Joypur at Lebangkula LP School on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day on June 8 where a total of 29 people were examined for Thalassemia.
