The Creator of A Colourful Taiwanese Village: 96-year-old Rainbow Grandpa!

Guwahati: This is certainly something new and interesting or you may also call unbelievable that an old man who is 96-year-old, has painted a whole village in Taichung city, Taiwan. The very fact that a man of such an old age has dared to take the pain of colouring up a village is amazing and even more interesting and appealing are the images he has drawn. The Taiwanese grandpa has painted the whole village in cats and dogs and many other interesting things that one can ever imagine!

Popularly known as the ‘rainbow grandpa’, this person, named Huang, has filled the walls of the houses of this village with puppies, kittens, pigs and so many other pictures that he learned to draw as a child. The old man, on being approached for knowing more about his life and this passion for drawing, said, “I was three-years-old when my father taught me how to draw.”

As the government had threatened to knock down the village, Huang was forced to take up a decision as unique as this. He added, “If I didn’t paint this village, they would have destroyed it. There were 1200 households living here. I painted to protect some of the homes and in the end, 11 were protected.”

Huang has been living in the village for 37 years and used his own money to support the expenses occurred in the painting of the village. The best part is that pleased with the gesture of the old man, the government too now agrees that the village should be preserved. Not only that, the village has turned into a leading tourist attraction for the visitors of Taichung city and attracts more than a million visitors each year.

Overjoyed at the huge response of the tourists, Huang adds, “I didn’t know that people would like it so much. Now everyone likes it.”
