Ferry to carry corpse in Majuli to be launched soon

JORHAT: The first ever dead body carrying ferry services between Jorhat to Majuli is slated to begin soon with the financial assistance provided from the MLA development fund of Majuli Island district. The service is likely to be inaugurated in presence of Majuli local MLA Sarbananda Sonowal within the month of August, said a source in the Health Department today.

According to the source, it was a long-pending demand of the people of Majuli island to carry the bodies of those dying in hospitals in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat and the like. Earlier, only the rich families could afford to hire a ferry to carry a dead body paying anywhere in the range of Rs 10 thousand to Rs 20 thousand. But soon the Majuli MLA cum Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is likely to inaugurate the service which will work 24X7 in carrying dead bodies to the island district, said administrative sources here.
