The marriage that turned out to be a mirage

From A Correspondent

Silchar, June 14: Matri Bhawan, a marriage hall at Link Road of this town, was looking bright and beautiful. All the nuptial activities were going on when the true ture of the would-be husband came off and the marriage had to be called off. This bizarre incident took place in the hall during the last phase of the marriage ceremony. After the ceremonial tie up at the auspicious time of ‘kanyadaan’, during which the bride’s father hands over the bride to the husband, the would-be-husband Biswabani Roy, son of Birendra Roy, failed to stand up straight and started behaving in an abnormal manner. He was also chanting the holy mantras in an abnormal way. The pandit performing the holy act stood up and refused to carry on.

This led to commotion and gossiping among the invitees present who became curious to know what was happening. Upon pressing, it was revealed that Biswabani Roy has been paralyzed at the lower portion of the body and is mentally unstable. Biswabani Roy, as told by his family, in an engineer working in Rajasthan. They are residents of zirpatty, Silchar. It has been alleged by the bride’s party that Biswabani along with his parents, relatives and friends have jointly tried to cheat them. The bride’s family has filed a case in Rangirkhari outpost. Upon initial enquiries made by the bride’s well-wishers, it was revealed that the negotiator in the marriage happened to be a woman Jaya th, a resident of Tarapur.

The auspicious ceremony, Mangalcharan took place on Friday and upon pressure created by the husband’s family, the marriage had to be fixed on this Sunday. This also raised many eyebrows in the bride’s family. They were suspicious about the husband’s way of walking since the very beginning. On an occasion, they even tried to know the truth. However, the husband’s family adopted all means to hide the truth. They even produced an excuse stating that Biswabani had slipped in the bathroom. It has been alleged that the husband’s family has created enough pressure to organize the ceremony at such a short notice. Mental illness and physical problems were kept secret form the other party and thus it created a rift.

The bride, who resides in the Rangirkhari area, is from a middle-class family and her family has to work very hard for making both ends meet. They have raised money from their neighbours so that a hassle-free marriage ceremony can take place. Apu Das, ward commissioner of ward number 18, along with the relatives and neighbours of the bride, went to the police station demanding immediate arrest. On the contrary, he said that on Monday morning, the bride’s father demanded a flat for his daughter.

It led to verbal feuds which ultimately needed the presence of police administration to bring the situation under control. Now, both the parties have filed a case. Biswabani’s mother said that Jaya th should not be accused of anything. His family mentioned it in particular that the bride’s family knew about the husband’s illness and that nothing has been kept as a secret. The mother has denied all the charges brought against her son and family. Considering the social ramification of the most bizarre incident, the police is probing its entire gamut in order to find out who is at fault or guilty.
