'There are no immediate plans to remove Syiem as KHADC leader'

FROM A CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, Oct 16: The two-day winter session of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) is expected to pass off unhindered after the Congress MDCs decided not to dethrone the current Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pynshngainlang N Syiem as of now.

The two-day KHADC winter session will be starting on October 18.

It may be mentioned that on Friday, Syiem, who was leading a Congress-led coalition in the KHADC, was suspended for a period of three years by the Congress for his anti-party activities. Soon after he was suspended, the parliamentary party meeting of the Congress MDCs in KHADC elected Langrin MDC Manstudy Nongrem as its new leader.

“As of now there are no plans to remove PN Syiem as the leader of the KHADC,” said Congress sources.

The decision of the Congress MDCs not to disturb the current alliance in the KHADC may have stemmed from the fact that they do not have the numbers to remove Syiem as the CEM.    There were reports that Congress MDCs met MDCs of smaller parties and individual members to convince them for their support on the floor of the House on Saturday.

It may be mentioned that the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Saturday handed a three-year suspension term to Mawrsynram legislator Pynshngainlang N Syiem even as it has accepted the resigtion of two of the five Members of District Council (MDCs).
