NAGAON: Thousands of fish and other living beings died in the water body of Laokhuwa sanctuary after poison was allegedly mixed in the water body by some miscreants. According to sources, the water body of the sanctuary turned into a valley of death after poison was mixed in the water by miscreants. Within a couple of days, thousands of fish and other living beings in the water body died. It was alleged by local people that due to negligence of some forest officials as well as employees, suspected foreign nationals have been encroaching forest land in the sanctuary over the years. The forest officials have done nothing except carry out eviction drive against these foreign nationals.

Local people suspect that this act of poisoning the water is revenge against forest officials for the eviction drives. Meanwhile, forest officials of the sanctuary on Sunday apprehended two persons from nearby areas for mixing poison in the water body. The nabbed persons have been identified as Ashikur Rahman and Khursed Ali. On the other hand, forest guards of Salna range on Sunday morning shot dead a leopard in Nonoi Tea Estate under Samaguri police station. According to sources, the leopard had unleashed terror in the area since a couple of days. The forest officials as well as the guards had been trying to send back the leopard to the dense forest and on Sunday morning, the leopard followed a guard and tried to attack him. To save himself, the forest guard fired at the leopard, sources added further.
