Three child labourers rescued from biscuit factory in Goalpara

Goalpara, October 28: In a sudden visit carried out on Wednesday by Deputy Commissioner (DC) JVN Subramanym, three child labourers were rescued from a local biscuit factory.

The children were working in the factory from dusk to dawn and in return received a meagre amount. “I have found the children engaged in preparing biscuits in a hazardous situation,” said the Deputy Commissioner. Ajit rayan Hazarika, ADC and a team of district administration officials accompanied in the mission.

Meanwhile, the rescued children complained of low wages. “We were given Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per month by the owner,” said a rescued child labourer. The children further alleged that their salaries were taken away regularly by their guardians.

On the other hand, the Deputy Commissioner later handed over the children to the government Child Welfare Committee (CWC) for their necessary care and protection. The CWC in return, registered a case against the owner and carried out a medical check-up in the local hospital. “The children will be given necessary counseling and arrangement will be made for their uninterrupted education, besides other provisions for the best interest of their future as per Juvenile Justice Care & Protection Act,” said Sofiqul Ahmed, chairperson of Goalpara CWC.
