MANGALDAI, June 20: In yet another significant achievement in the continuing intensified operation against the organized gang of armed poachers, the Darrang Police on Monday night arrested three hardcore absconding poachers from Guwahati city and subsequently recovered one .303 rifle along with 28 rounds of live ammunitions from their possession.
The arrested poachers have been identified as bi Hussain, son of Abdul Kalam, Sahar Ali, son of Unus Ali and Mainul Hoque, son of Hussain Ali of village Rangakhara pathar under Dalgaon Police station. All the poachers were involved in the killing of a rhino in Orang tiol Park (ONP) on January 28 and since then they were taking shelter in Hatigaon area of Guwahati. Officer in-Charge of Dhula Police station, Sub-Inspector Ranjit Hazarika acting on a tip-off picked up two poachers from Guwahati who confessed their involvement in the killing of the rhino and led the police to the recovery of the rifle from the house of Sahar Ali and the live ammunitions from the house of Mainul Hoque.
The poachers had killed the rhino on January 28 when Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal made his first visit to the district to take part in the Krishak Swahid Divas at Pothorughat.
