Three held on charges of murdering student

Trio allegedly killed a college student, accusing his mother of practising witchcraft

KOKRAJHAR, April 29: Three persons of East Maligaon village under Bismuri Police outpost in Kokrajhar district were arrested from their village on Friday morning in connection with the murder of a BA fourth semester student of Bodofa UN Brahma College, Kajalgaon.

Student Achinta Basumatary was killed by some villagers alleging his mother of practicing witchcraft. Basumatary was taken away from his house on April 22 last and remained untraced till date.

The mother of Achinta-Garjai Basumatary along with her relatives lodged a complaint at Kokrajhar police station on April 28 regarding the incident. A case was registered vide no.246/2016, under section 143/302/201, IPC at Kokrajhar PS.

Garjai Basumatary mentioned the me of four villagers suspected to have been involved in licking up of her son. They are Thobra rzary, Gabinda Basumatary, Elesh Basumatary and Sunula Basumatary of the same village. She also said that the villagers had been accused her as witch for the past five years and even asked to leave the village to settle in Sulmari village.

Based on the complaint lodged in the police station, the police team on Friday morning carried out operation at East Maligaon village but all the accused persons mentioned in the FIR by Garjai was absconding along with other villagers. The police team brought the younger brother of accused Thobra rzary-Ranjan rzary (23), Anil Basumatary (60), father of accused Gabinda Basumatary and Dhiren rzary (40), father of Elesh rzary on Friday morning for interrogation.

Sources said the murder of Achinta Basumatary has been confirmed but where his body is buried is yet to be established. The search of the body is being carried out by the police.
