Three Margherita gang rape accused in cop's net

DIGBOI, September 5: Based on circumstantial evidence in the alleged gang rape and strangulation of college student on August 29 in Lekhapani in Tinsukia district, Margherita and Ledo Police arrested three youths, identified as ssir-Ud- Din Laskar (20), Faizzur Rahman (21) and Nur-Uddin- Laskar. All hail from various locations of gaon in lower Assam.

The arrested three worked as daily wage earners in the Ledu-Lekhapani-Jagun area. The arrests were made after a long operation in various locations.

Talking to The Sentinel, Inspector  of Margherita Police Station, Hiranya Borah said that though there were valid  evidences, yet thorough investigation and interrogation were being carried out.

On August 29, on the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan, a group of miscreants raped and murdered a Tangsa girl near Burma Camp in Lekhapani under Margherita police station of Tinsukia district.  The victim was a student of B.Com first year, Government Women College, Margherita and was returning home from college in the afternoon when the gruesome act was committed in a solitary location.

Margherita recently witnessed a huge protest in front of the SDO office by Margherita College Students’ Union, tiol Student Union of India (NSUI), Chaatra Mukti Sangram Samiti, All Assam Hindu Students’ Union, All Tea Tribe Students’ Union of Margherita, local citizens and the family members of the deceased girl.

Meanwhile, representatives of various organizations, including the Singpho Youth Club and other cultural and student groups have expressed shock at not getting adequate media support while crying for justice and to draw the attention of the BJP government at the Centre towards the security of women.

Based on Margherita PS case no. 228/15, the arrested culprits have been prosecuted u/s 376 and 302 IPC.
