Three poachers bbed at ONP, rifle recovered

MANGALDAI, Feb 13: In a significant achievement, the Darrang Police led by newly-joined Superintendent of Police Sreejith Thiraviam, arrested three hardcore poachers who were involved in the killing of a rhino in broad daylight in Orang tiol Park (ONP) on January 28, that too during the visit of Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal in Darrang district.

The arrested three poachers have been identified as Abdul Wahed, Abdul Rahman and Jakir Hussain The police also recovered one .303 rifle used in the poaching. Addressing a press meet at the office of the Superintendent of Police here on Monday, Superintendent of Police informed the media persons that the team of Dhula and Shyampur Police Station on February 11 arrested the poachers from village Rowmari Chapori adjacent to ONP and recovered the rifle which was concealed under water in the pond of Jakir Hussain. Till date the police have arrested a total of six poachers while two are likely to be arrested soon.

Expressing satisfaction over the prompt initiative of the Officer in-charge of Dhula and Shyampur Police Station mely Sub Inspector Ranjit Hazarika and Sub Inspector Kartik Barua, the Superintendent of Police accompanied by Additiol Superintendent of Police Suman Chakravorty said that the police headquarters would be appraised of these achievements and urged to accord DGP’s commendation. He also sought all cooperation from the conscious circles and the media persons of the district in ensuring full safety and protection of the one-horned rhino.
